Barkitecture - Dog House Building Contest - WINNER Best Urban Dwelling
“Summer Home” Concept Statement

We collaborated with the award winning architect firm Geschke Group Architects to create this year’s design. Our design goal was to build a doghouse that was architecturally creative and unique; while at the same time being functional for the dog and owner.

Design and Function:
Our doghouse is elevated off the ground on skids, and ¾” holes are drilled into the floor. This allows air circulation from below to help cool the interior. We have open eaves and 1x2 slats on the side to also create air circulation. The covered front porch allows your dog to “take in the view” while being out of the elements. The entrance is extra wide to accommodate all sizes of dogs.

Materials and Green Elements:
We recycled metal from an old job for the structure of our doghouse. The metal makes it very strong and sturdy, but it also makes it lighter for transport. The standing seam metal roof was also reused; being left over from a recent job we built. It is very light, but also durable. The 1x2 Ipe wood slats are from sustainable forests, and are resistant to termites, rot, and mold. We also coated the floor with a water proof coating to make it easy to clean and wash out and to also make it resistant to rot and decay.

Our doghouse is made with love from repurposed, green materials that are both functional and beautiful. We hope you enjoy it.
